Oh. Hey

24 Apr

So… it’s been over a year since I last wrote and I kind of thought I was done with blogging.

But here I am!  So let’s get down to the business of catching up.

Since you’re dying to know, the short reason for the year-plus hiatus of KSL is that I got a new job that requires I focus and work much harder during the day.  Previously, I was blogging whilst sitting at my desk with a workload that definitely ebbed and flowed (mostly ebbing, let’s be honest.)

I’m still busy at the new gig, but I want to make more time to write and reflect on my running, as I’ve determined that this summer is going to be one of high and smart mileage.   I think reflecting and putting it out there for others to comment on helps with the “smart” part.

Other stuff that happened since last I wrote:  I ran 3 mediocre marathons on  mediocre training.

Lehigh Valley, Sept 8 — 3:57:29

So, I was gonna CRUSH this one, guys!   I even enlisted Lauren‘s coaching and she drew up an awesome training plan for me.   Then… I got the new job (which requires longer hours.)  Also, everyone and their brother got married last summer and I traveled to 6 weddings + bachelorette parties, yadda yadda yadda excuses, excuses, excuses.  My training was really sporadic and I think I decided to go ahead and run the thing anyway about 2 weeks prior.  Below is a picture of T taking off my shoes after I passed out fell asleep on the couch after a “little” bubbly at my friend’s wedding 2 nights before.  Also, there was a  fire alarm in the hotel the night before the race and we had to evacuate.  Also, Lori wasn’t able to start her race at all, since we discovered that morning (approximately 10 minutes before the gun) that the half started in an entirely different spot.  Whoopsie.

For the record, that is a couch in our suite at Oheka Castle -- not anywhere in my home.

All in all, though, I liked this race.  And I’m signed up to run it again this fall!

Then I ran NYC.  Woof.  3:59:23.  A sub-4:00 by the skin of my teeth, but it wasn’t pretty.  I honestly don’t recall what my training looked like between Lehigh Valley and this one, but I don’t think I cracked 40 mpw.  In years past, I have thought of NYCM day as being up there with Christmas, but I didn’t enjoy it so much in 2013 (not evidenced, however, in the pic my mom snapped of me at mile #15 below) Anyhoo, I declined my automatic entry for 2014 and I actually feel pretty good about it.  I plan to be out there cheering my heart out and I hope my one spot out of 40-something-thousand went to someone who really wanted to run it!

Then winter hit and — breaking news– it was cold and it snowed a lot and it sucked!

However, I had a little trip planned that was getting me through the more brutal days:  I was attending the LA premiere of the Veronica Mars movie!

For those of you who aren’t aware, Veronica Mars is the best television show of all time.  Sadly, it only lasted for 3 seasons.  There was a small but very fervent fanbase and the fervent factor came into play when they (we) funded a film, thanks to Rob Thomas (the show’s creator), Kristen Bell (its eponymous hero), and Kickstarter.

Best. Show. EVER.

Best. Show. EVER.

Few things in life give me unfettered joy — running isn’t one of them, btw — but watching Veronica Mars is and always has been.  So I kicked in some of my hard-earned coin and was rewarded by not only helping the movie get made (which was, let’s face it, the real reward), but also by getting a ticket + 1 for the LA premiere!

As I waited with bated breath to find out what date the premiere would fall on, I realized that it was possible that it would be around the same time as the LA marathon.  In January of this year, I discovered that it was, in fact, a mere 3 days after.  Decision made: I signed up for the race, booked plane tickets  and trained (shittily) through a shitty January and February.

But… the LA marathon was the bomb!  One of my favorite marathons everrrrrr.  Though people complained about the heat that day, somehow it didn’t affect me.  (How was this the case after I crashed and burned in the heat in Miami last year?  I do not know.)  I had a blast, ran at a pace that felt comfortable, genuinely enjoyed the sites and the spectators, snapped pics of different mile markers as I passed them, and kicked it in with a sub 8:00 25th mile as I coasted on a nice downhill that dumped us off along the Santa Monica beach.  I was positively giddy as I crossed the finish.

WTF. I look like I'm at a revival. Also, yes that shirt gives me pink underarms even though I've worn it before. Also, evidence that I've worn it before is above since I wore the exact same outfit for the NYCN.

Finish time: 3:56:34, with a negative split.  I was totally content with that, given my lackadaisical approach to it all.

T and I beached it up for a few days and then that Wednesday was one of the best events of my life.  Saw all the stars of my beloved show, got pics with a few, saw the movie, loved it, had some drinks, and went to bed completely blissfully happy.

Red Carpet ready before the show!

Speaking of blissfully happy, one other minor event happened since last I wrote…

…I’mma get hitched this year!  T shocked me by proposing last July and I’ve been in the midst of wedding planning since then.

As the summer approaches (freaking FINALLY), I’m training for the Cleveland marathon and plan to use that as a kickoff to some solid miles for June, July, and August.  I have done no speedwork whatsoever for Cleveland, but I’m OK with that.  T’s family lives in Cleveland and a bunch of his friends are running it, so it will be a fun day.  I do want to finally clinch that BQ in Lehigh Valley.  Although even marathonguide.com denotes my PR as a BQ, unfortunately that happened just in time for the BAA to tighten its qualifying times.  B@lls.  Also, I should note that it happened freaking 3 years ago.

So, this will be the summer of high, quality miles (who’s with me?) and putting the finishing touches on my big, fat Ohio wedding.  Yay!
