I’m Falling Apart

So, since last I wrote, I’ve come down with a really awesome sinus infection!  I’ve never had a sinus infection before, and I am here to tell you that it is a special and unique kind of torture!  Cool beans!

Ugh, it all began last Wednesday when I went to see the Hunger Games movie (sooo awesome; have a serious ladycrush on Jennifer Lawrence, it’s not right.)  My “allergies” seemed to escalate into something a little more, which included a sweet cornucopia of achy bod, terrible headache, sniffles, coughs, chills, and fever.  I slept like sh*t, but convinced myself I felt better and went to work in the morning… where I wound up being yelled at by work buddies to go the f*ck home leaving a few hours later and holed up on the couch for the rest of the day, reading the second Hunger Games book.  (By the way, I did in fact include the word “cornucopia” in tribute — yes, TRIBUTE– to the HG.)

Again, I slept like sh*t and didn’t even bother the charade of attending work the next day.  I did, however, drag my achy a$$ to physical therapy because fixing this “little” foot issue is, oh, sort of important to me….

The receptionist looked confused when I showed up (on time for my 1PM appointment) and said, “Oh, Katie, I didn’t think you were in the book ’til later on today.”  (Yes, they know me by name at the front desk of my PT by now and yes, this is f*cking sad.)  I checked my calendar and indeed, my appointment was at 2:30 and I had written that down, but for some reason in my confused and delirious state, decided my appointment was at 1.  Flustered, I told her I was running a fever, hadn’t even gone to work, and had to cancel even though I understood they would have to charge me.  (Damn.  It.)

Then, I went back home and holed back up on the couch.  A few hours later, I decided I felt better, so I packed up some stuff for the weekend and joined T to Manhattan to pick up our rental car and meet up with our friends Steve and Danielle for our trip to DC….

We had a blast in DC and I’m not sorry I went!  I mean, was sleeping on an aerobed in our friends’ living room the best thing for my cold?  Probably not.  Was sitting at a rooftop bar drinking Moo Thunder and playing Scattergories for hours just what the doctor ordered?  Hmmm, no… but it was *was* super fun.

Sunday I spectated the crap out of the Cherry Blossom 10-miler.  I’m getting pretty good at this spectating sh*t…

Post-race in the Metro station with T, who did an awesome job, especially considering his training was nil. We won't talk about what a slap in the face it is that he CHOOSES NOT TO RUN, WHEN HE CAN! Argh. 😉

Monday after work, I went to a Flywheel class, which is where I realized and admitted that I was in a pretty sorry state.  I was spent before the first song was over, and basically phoned it in for the rest of the class.  My “score” was by far, the lowest I’ve ever gotten.  Flywheel gives you a “score” that gets higher and higher throughout the class the harder you work.  Typically, for a 45 minute class, I’m around a 230-250.  Monday, I didn’t even break 200.

When I got home that night, I found myself in an immense amount of pain in my jaw area, which was weird.  I attempted to knock myself out with NyQuil, but still did not sleep well.

I went to work yesterday, ’cause why not, then I went to the doctor, who confirmed that I had a sinus infection that had settled in nicely to my jaw area.  He also gave me sh*t for going to Flywheel while my body was fighting an infection.  (I thought maybe there was something to that whole “flushing out toxins”…. no?)  Anyhow, it feels like when I used to get my braces tightened, only about a million times more painful and awful.  Good stuff!  The jaw pain has only intensified to the point where I want to bash my head against my desk repeatedly.

… the good news is that I’m in too much pain to be uber depressed that my foot feels exactly the same as it did before the PRP injection…

WOMP WOMP DEBBIE DOWNER.  I’m seriously f*cking falling apart.

Tell me something good.  Are you a Hunger Games fan?  I got into it way late in the “game” (haha?) and am just now starting book 3, but I love the series.  I am usually pretty wary of things that have such a huge following like HG, but I have to admit there is a reason people love these books– ‘CAUSE THEY’RE AWESOME.

I Would Punch a Baby in the Face To Go For a Run Right Now*

Listen, I love babies.  My niece and nephew (OK, they are 2.5 and 5, respectively– not babies) are the loves of my life.  (I still call them babies.)  Tons of my besties have babies that I adore, including my dear friend Jen, who I am going to visit this weekend.  I’ll be meeting little Molly for the first time, just before her 1st birthday!

Anyhow, I’m kidding.  Jen, please do not forbid me from coming.  I promise I would never even think of punching Molly.

But it’s really difficult for me to express how badly I want to run.  It’s been 10 LONG WEEKS since my last run.  It’s been practically 4 months now since my PF diagnosis when I cut back on my mileage.  I feel like a broken record because I KNOW I’ve repeated this information again and again.

Yeah, I’m appealing for sympathy.

Actually, I’m appealing for good wishes for Friday.  Friday is when the PRP is happening.

Whenever I think too much about it, I actually start to feel a bit weak and woozy.  I am trying not to freak out about it because that is not helping at all.  And my doc is making it sound like it’s no big deal.

I’ve consulted some friends, family, and acquaintances who are doctors and Meggie even put me in touch with a doctor who is pretty serious runner and also had PRP for her PF!  (Meggie, you win awesome blog buddy of the year!)  This has all made me feel better about going forward with the procedure.

My dear friend Elizabeth, who is getting her PhD in bioethics, sent me a long and informative email with her thoughts on PRP.  She detailed a myriad of excellent points, including this one, which had not occurred to me but is very valid:

“…because PRP is not a drug, it is not being marketed by pharmaceutical companies out to
make money. Yes, the treatment itself does obviously cost something and someone is making money off of it, but it doesn’t have the likes of Pfizer or other big pharma companies with huge PR and marketing departments
advertising the treatment to the masses.”

*Eliz, I hope you don’t mind me quoting you, but you’re just so darn eloquent.

The overwhelming consensus from my due diligence is that while it may not work, (PLEASEOHPLEASEOHPLEASEOHPLEASE LET IT WORK) it is not harmful.

But OH PLEASE LET IT WORK.

I have experienced a lot of strife from this little foot injury– some of which I’ve detailed on the blog, but a lot of which I have not.  I know it sounds dramatic.  But yeah, not running has been really difficult for me.  Especially since I have been doing just what I’m supposed to.  Plantar fasciitis is the most frustrating injury because it just seems there is never an end in sight, and I have gotten so many instructions that confuse me.

“Try barefoot running!”

“Never EVER go barefoot!”

“Don’t wear flat shoes!  They have no arch support!”

“Don’t wear heels!  They tighten up your calves!”

Etc etc.  People swear by all kinds of remedies, but the most popular ones (the night splint and no running and PT) have obviously not worked for me.  Time to pull out the big guns, er needles.  WAH.

On a lighter note, I watched the NYC Half on Sunday, which was a lot of fun!  Lori PRed and did awesome!  Celia and Josie nailed it, too!  I was waiting eagerly for Lori to pass at 47th and 7th and snapped a bunch of random photos in the meantime.

So this weekend, I have to get this little pesky injection out of the way, then it’s off to Charlotte for a girls’ weekend.  And next weekend… well, next weekend I will go spectate another race (one I am signed up for, sigh) and I will do it with a smile and — I hope– feeling as though I’m on the brink of running again myself.  I hope.  I hope.  I hope.  I hope……

*just to further clarify, I would never actually punch a baby**!  Look at this face (my nephew, when he actually WAS a baby.)  LOVE

Schadenfreude is alive and well in Katie-land…

Check out this little tidbit from Runners World.

…OK, so it’s not quite that extreme.  I wouldn’t say I am actually taking PLEASURE in his misfortune.  I just really like the word (and the concept of) “schadenfreude.”

Reading this made me feel all, “OK, this happens to even the BEST runners.”  Until I got the part where he said he hasn’t missed one run because of it.  Then I went back to feeling angry and surly.

The Cherry Blossom 10-miler is in about 3.5 weeks and since I’m currently at the level of “2 minutes of running, followed by one of walking, for 15 minutes total, on the treadmill” and my foot still does not feel normal, I’m gonna say it’s not looking too promising.

On a lighter note, I had a great time in California.  I never thought I would love LA as much as I did.  Laguna Beach is aite, too. 😉

That’s all for now.  Despite it being a beautiful day outside back here in NYC, I am in a slightly-better-than-lousy mood, due to the fact that this gorgeous weather feels like a slap in my non-running face.  I don’t care that that makes no sense.  Peace!

The Weekend Round-up and an Impending Doc Visit!

So, my weekend was busy as hell with, you guessed it, NO RUNNING and a lot of eating and drinking.  Let’s just say fitting into my favorite jeans is a thing of the past!

But whatever.  The weekend kicked off with a visit to the man I’m seeing on the side (sorry, T!):  my physical therapist.  He did the usual– humiliated me by having me do all kinds of balancing things that further prove my ankles are weak as hell, and then massaged my disgusting foot.  (Note to self:  get a pedicure before I leave for California, where I hope to sport some open-toed shoes.)

THEN I met up with T and some of our friends at a delicious restaurant– Back 40!  We drank delicious beer (Kelso IPA was my beverage of choice) and ate some freaking awesome food.  The 6 of us got a charcuterie plate with lots of delightful meats and cheeses on it.  As the plate came to a sad end, I reached across the table to cut up the last remaining morsel of food– a hunk of cheese.

… yeah, after I sawed away at it a few times, I looked up and saw Steve watching me attempt to cut what was actually a napkin folded into a triangle.  The realization set in just as Steve said, “Um, Katie, I think that’s a napkin.”

OK, so it actually doesn't look like cheese at all. In my defense, it was dimly lit, it was across the table... and I was several beers in. And I was hungry and I REALLY love cheese...

Anyhow, that was a riveting narrative, was it not?  Once we all stopped laughing and my face un-flushed a bit, I wound up ordering a salad and T ordered a burger and fries– both of which were DELICIOUS!  Then, I twisted T’s arm and we ordered a stout float for us to share.  This is something I’ve always wanted to try.  Two of my favorite things– ice cream and beer.  It was AWESOME.  I see many stout floats in my future.  (And the need to give up on jeans and just wear sweat pants from here on out.)

So, Back 40 gets 2 thumbs up from me!  After dinner, we headed to Lunasa to meet up with some more friends.  Lunasa will always hold a special place in my heart, because that is where we had our joint birthday party a few years ago.

Anyway, that was Friday night.  Saturday, I went to Flywheel for the 12:45 one-hour class.  As you know, I am pretty “meh” about spinning– mainly because I view it as inferior to running and I am bitter and angry sad that I can’t run.  However, Flywheel at 12:45 on a Saturday is a much different scene from Flywheel at 6 AM during the week.  The class was full, everyone was super enthusiastic… and I LOVED the instructor, Ryan.  He informed everyone at the beginning of class that he had lost a stunning 60 pounds since he began taking classes and then teaching a year ago.  And you could just tell he loved teaching.  He was so fun and encouraging and he played an awesome mix of cheesy pop music– my favorite.  Rihanna?  Yes, please, and more of her!  I felt really happy and energized and was drenched in sweat when I left.  Mmmmm… Then T met up with me and we went to Murray’s Cheese in Grand Central to finally use the gift card my father got me for Christmas last year.  It was an AMAZING gift, but for some reason I never got around to cashing it in until Saturday.

That night, our friends Ben, Robbie, and Sara came over.  We intended to bust out the cheese for them, but instead, we all rushed out the door to Il Bambino, which I consider to be the jewel in the crown that is our neighborhood.  They have the most amazing paninis, delicious beer, and a beautiful garden out back, too boot.  We obviously did not sit in the garden on Saturday night, but we did enjoy the paninis and beer!  I forced myself to diverge from my regular order (gorgonzola dolce, prosciutto, and fig panini) and try something new.  I was not sorry– the panini with fried eggplant, roasted mushrooms, goat cheese, and spicy mayo was DELICIOUS… as was the Six Point Sweet Action I washed it down with.  Again, I’m a health nut.

After dinner, we ventured out for a few more beers and then went back to our place to watch the best awful movie of all time — The Room.  This movie deserves a post all of its own.  That’s all I’ll say.

Sunday featured brunch with friends and then a trip to Manhattan where T played a soccer game with Zog Sports.  Then, we went out for a few Goose Island IPAs (always a delicious standby) and back home where I promptly conked out on the couch.  (But only after I ate a healthy dose of the Murray’s cheese.  THANKS, DAD.)

All-in-all, an extremely unhealthy, busy, and fun weekend.

And today, I have an appointment with my doctor, who I hope will have some bright ideas for how to get this little b*tch of an injury to be history so that I can be running again.  A while ago, I said something about how I hoped to be able to participate in the spring session of the NYRR class I’ve been missing so much.  But that class starts up… in 2 weeks.  And I have to admit, with a great big frustrated sigh, that it doesn’t seem so realistic.  Now my goal is to be able to participate in the Cherry Blossom 10-Miler that I signed up for a long time ago.

And on Thursday… we leave for a little jaunt to California!  Sunshine, beaches, and In-N-Out Burger, here we come!

What’s up with you?  Have you ever seen The Room?  Ever had In-N-Out Burger?  (People tell me how amazing it is!  I’ve never had it, so I’m excited to try it!)  Do you find yourself disgusted by the sheer amount of cheese and beer I consumed over the weekend?  Do you think I’ll be able to run the damn 10-miler?  If my foot is still f**ked up, would it be wrong to show up anyway and trip everyone out of spite?  Lemme know! 😉

Farewell, 2011! Bring it, 2012!

Oh, hi.  It’s New Years Eve-Eve, and all I can think about is my not-even-half-packed-up studio on the Upper East Side and the fact that my movers are coming at 9 AM sharp tomorrow to cart ALL MY SH*T to Astoria.

I’m stressed.

And while I am stoked to be living in sin with T, I would be lying if I said I was stoked to leave the UES, which is where I have lived for the past 7.5 years.  (Good Lord, I am old.)

Honestly, my anxiety about leaving the UES has very little/zero to do with outer borough snobbery.  I LOVE Astoria.  There are awesome restaurants and bars there, it’s basically a hop-skip-and-jump from Manhattan, (really!  it is!  come VISITTTTT!) and several of my NYC besties live there already.  Plus there’s the whole palatial-apartment-for-a-fraction-of-Manhattan-rent thing.

But I am going to miss the accessibility to the park.  It’s now going to be a real effort to get there.  Iwill say I have run over the Q’boro Bridge from Queens to Manhattan countless times in the past year and a half.  And it’s a nice run.

But from T’s place (now my place!) just to the base of the park, it’s already close to 4 miles.   I am going to have to get used to running with a backpack and showering and getting ready at the office, a notion that I do not relish.  But I can and will make it work.  I’m also going to allow myself cabs to the park from time to time, seeing as how I’ll be saving a bundle on rent.

At least the move stuff is keeping me distracted from my true current angst, which is:

Yeah.  It’s still there.  It still hurts.

I went to a spinning class on Wednesday morning before work, after a week of sloth and cookie-inhalation .  Ho hum.  Yesterday, I just couldn’t bear the thought of going to the gym again.  And while it was cold out, I actually love running in cold (I prefer to think of it as brisk!) weather.  So I suited up and went for a little run.

Anyhow, I know I’m not supposed to run, but I put my inserts in my running shoes and I spent a good amount of time rolling out the arch of my foot with a frozen water bottle before AND after the run.  And– dare I say it?– the pain wasn’t quite as bad as it has been!  This could quite possibly be wishful thinking…

Anyhow, thus far the grand total mileage for my week is a little over 4 miles.  Wow.

But let’s talk about pleasant things, shall we?  Like my year in running!  This year marked my 10th (and 11th) marathons and my two fastest times, including one BQ.  I prefer not to split hairs on this topic, so yes I do consider my 3:38:52 in Columbus a BQ.  It’s not my fault that Boston was already filled for 2012 by the time I qualified.  Also not my fault that they made the qualifying times tighter for 2013 and now I have to get a 3:35 (or more like a 3:30 to ensure entry– the field is getting tougher and tougher!) in order to qualify!  Yay, fast women!

So yeah.  One of the highest points of my life was on October 16, 2011

And though it was a pretty f**king tough fight, I am proud of how I fared in the NYC marathon, a mere 3 weeks later.  3:45:35, and while I know that’s not impressive for a lot of folks, it was better than I expected.

I was pretty miserable at keeping good track of my mileage, but from what I do have, my mileage for the year was 1406.  I definitely didn’t record everything, but that number averages out to 27 miles a week, which isn’t horrible!  I don’t really make New Years resolutions (why set myself up for failure?) but I really DO want to do better at recording mileage this year.  I signed up for Daily Mile yesterday and thus far have a whopping 4 miles recorded in there.  But I’m hoping that will help me keep better track of my miles in 2012!  And I’m hoping those miles are many! 🙂

As for races in 2011, here’s my New York Road Runners summary and proof that I qualified for NYCM 2012!  Holla!

Yeah, my paces are all over the damn place.

I ran a few additional races, including the Boilermaker in Utica, which I definitely want to do again this summer.  That race is a hilly little b*tch, but in general any event that combines my two favorite things– beer and running?  Sign me up indefinitely!

What other races will I do in 2012?  Well, I hope to run at least one other marathon because I would really like to run a 3:30 and I do not want to have a time goal for NYCM.  That race is just too damn stressful withOUT having a goal; I can’t fathom running it WITH one.

So yes, I would love to run a 3:30 in 2012 and thus, qualify for Boston in 2013.  I am wary of saying this publicly, though, because 3:30 is a lofty goal for me.  It involves shaving nearly 9 minutes off of my PR.  Some days I think this is  definitely a possibility; others I think definitely not.

Oh yeah, and there’s that whole PF thing that I think I’ve mentioned a few times before… kind of a factor…

I am NOT running Surf City.  I need to be nice to my foot so I can run many, many more miles in the future.  That race is cursed for me anyway.  Second damn year in a row I signed up for it and am not able to run it.  Harumpf.

I AM running the Cherry Blossom 10-miler!  I’m excited for this.  I love DC and I’ve never been at cherry blossom time.

I AM signed up for the Manhattan Half, which is scarily soon.  Not sure if my li’l foot will be up to snuff by then…

If and when my foot gets better, I will run many, many more races, ’cause I love races and stuff.

I’m really losing focus here…

Anyhow, one final good thing that happened this year was that I discovered running blogs and started reading them obsessively.  Then I started this li’l blog.  And while most times I feel it is boring as hell, I have had fun with it!

So, thanks for being, all-in-all, a pretty sweet year, 2011!  Happy New Year, everyone!  Bring it on, 2012! 🙂
